Puppy Training Day 11

Today it was yet another freezing morning and sunny.

07:00am – He way noisier this morning than the last few days. I still waited until 7:30am to get him because it was dark before then. I just had to time me letting him out with him being quiet versus yelling.

There we walked, he pooped – today it was three times – we came back, he drank some water and came with me to get his breakfast. We then walked to the kennel and I gave him his breakfast.

Coach Kim determined last night that we should give him more food and this morning he looked like a little black tootsie roll.

11:00am – Session 1.

We walked to the training session with the place mat. This is a familiar behavior in an unfamiliar environment – sometimes puppys will think it’s an entirely new behavior! Our neighbor had some workers there and Babe was distracted by watching them.

When they backed out of the driveway the truck started beeping – Babe stopped to watch.

When puppies get distracted it’s extremely important not to force them to do anything. You must wait them out until they give you their attention again. Then you pick up as if nothing happened.

He did great with place, awesome with ultimate workout, whistle recall and down. Kim’s been working down alot and he shone at it this morning.

4:00pm – Session 2 .

Today was another great day full of distractions.

There were people walking in our neighborhood, along with kids getting off the but which provided opportunity for Babe to look around and also for me to reinforce him when his attention was on me. There were some behaviors he did really well during this time and some that he did not. He did great with down and stay where I was able to take steps back and side to side and he held his position for 15 seconds. The ultimate workout he was more distracted so with this behavior I took a step back from where he had been and got a good approximation and called it a day. Some days you’re not always moving forward with a behavior and that’s ok. That’s why having steps are so important because you can always take a few steps back so that you can move forward again.

6:00pm – play time and dinner.

8:00pm – play time and walk.

10:00pm – play time and walk.
